Vail Vision May 10, 2006

He did what?

Did you know that Martin Luther believed that Jesus and Mary Magdalene had an affair? Needless to say, this Luther tidbit is not part of the seminary education. After much research, the crack research teams of Christ Lutheran Vail and Fountain of Life have tracked down the source of this outrageous claim.

Often at the end of the day, Martin Luther would relax at his table with friends and talk about the world, religion, politics, life, and love. These sound-bites were preserved for posterity in "Table Talks... They provide an insight into the "lighter side.. of Luther. He is at times direct, sarcastic, amusing, but almost always humorous. Luther had a unique gift of humor. There is a quote in Table Talks, volume 54, page 154. It is simply written as entry number 1472. There is no context, no story, and no explanation.
This is the entry...

No. 1472: Christ Reproached as Adulterer Between April 7 and May 1, 1532
[Martin Luther said,] "Christ was an adulterer for the first time with the woman at the well, for it was said, “Nobody knows what he's doing with her' [John 4:27]. Again [he was an adulterer] with Magdalene, and still again with the adulterous woman in John 8 [:2 “11], whom he let off so easily. So the good Christ had to become an adulterer before he died...

We don't know the context of the quote, but it is patently obvious that Luther is being sarcastic. Luther is responding to those who were reading more into John 4:27 than the text warrants. This is something that Luther would never have done. In fact it would be against his core belief.

Sadly, this kind of textual gymnastics is still around. The Jesus Seminar people do this all the time. It attracts publicity and helps them sell books. It's amazing that people would use this quote to show that Christ and Magdalene had an affair. It is simply not intellectually honest. In the long run it only hurts their case. People don't like weak arguments and usually avoid those who make them.

Thanks Barb Bloxham for putting me on to this!
