Vail Vision November 1, 2006

Time to Vote!

This Tuesday, November 7, we get to exercise our right as American citizens to vote. Turnout for midterm elections are typically much lower than for those years when we vote for the President. It is rare for more than 40% of registered voters to turn up and vote. That makes polling data unpredictable in mid-term. It all comes down to who shows up on Election Day. A motivated minority will do much better than an unmotivated majority.

But voting isn't simply a civic duty. It is also our Christian duty. It is through the voting process that Christians can bring about laws that are pleasing to God. We should be educated and vote as God's Word and the Holy Spirit lead us.

Christianity is not isolated to one political party. You can be a Christian and also be a Democrat, Independent or Republican. Trust me, all political parties need your input! What you cannot do is simply throw your hands into the air and say that politics is "too messy to get involved". Jesus said to render to Caesar that which is Caesar's. In America, we render to Caesar our vote. (The American Caesars also wants your money, but that is a different topic altogether).

Because of our system, the political party in power typically gets to set all the rules. They guide the legislation, chair the committees, and bring legislation to vote. That is why there is so much talk about which political party will have the majority next week. The majority party gets to set the agenda.

The American government system is good, but it is not perfect. Voting has winners and losers. The losers don't have any say at all. That is why politics gets ugly sometimes.

Pray for our leaders. Pray for our country. Pray for wisdom. And may God guide you as you consider the candidates and the issues.
