Vail Vision February 25, 2007

Speaking of swords...

Prince Harry, the younger son of Princess Diana and Prince Charles, has been in the news lately. It appears that the prince will be deployed to Iraq on the next rotation.

His full name is Henry Charles Albert David Mountbatten-Windsor, but to his company, he will simply be known as "Second Lieutenant Wales... He will serve with the A Squadron of The Blues and Royals, also known as the Household Cavalry.

When Jennifer and I were newly-married, I served an internship with Blue Circle Cement in Greenhithe, England. We learned quite a bit about British culture (and fell in love with British comedy), but there is one thing for certain; the Brits love their royal family. We (and about 10 million others) were fortunate to be in England when Prince Harry's uncle, Andrew- the Duke of York, married Sarah Ferguson. It was a parade of the crowned jewels. Afterwards, all 10 million of us crowded in Buckingham square to watch the royal family wave.

At one time the King had supreme authority, but he became bound by law in 1215 with the signing of the Magna Carta. Now, the Queen is in charge of church and state in a figurative sense only. The power in government is in the British Parliament and the power of the church is centered in the Archbishop of Canterbury

Because he is the second son of Prince Charles, Harry is third in line to the British throne. Now if he were king, he would have a very long title, a good lineage and adoring support from the British people. But spiritually, being a soldier, or prince, or all around good chap doesn't give one special status with God. God sees into the heart. What God looks for is faith in Jesus Christ as the one who bought and purchased salvation on the cross.

We have entered Lent. This is the time of the church year when we ponder and reflect the event that changed the world forever. As I think about the Royal Family, I am reminded of the words of Paul in his letter to the Romans 8:38-39,

"For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord...

Blessings.

David Hook

LUTHERAN WOMEN IN MISSION
The Mighty Mites collected on February 11th, amounted to $79.75. This is almost four times our previous high total. A penny, nickel, dime or quarter can multiply rapidly when we each put in our spare change. Each of you is a blessing to many who receive help from Mites. Thank you.

Golf Shirts will come in a variety of colors. We will soon be taking orders. The committee hopes that you will like the shirt selected. We are anticipating that every member would like to have one. We are looking forward to a Family Sunday when we can all wear a Christ Lutheran Vail golf shirt. Golfers, this will be a great way for you to spread the word of Christ and His Church. We continue to look for the best value and most reasonably priced Tee shirt for children.

Coming Events: March 6, Coordinators (that is everyone interested) will meet at 7:00PM at the home of Kae Schaefer, 449 S Sunny Rock Dr, Corona de Tucson; March 17, at the home of Sylvia Jarvis, 481 N Vail View Rd. We will have brunch at 9:00 AM followed by our guest speakers, Vicar Karl and Joanne Schloeman. We will have a short meeting and adjourn by 11:00AM. Maps will be available on the WiM table.

Do we have any Thrivent members? We hope to apply for matching funds for our Spring Golf Shirt Sale. Call Kae 574-8536 if you are a member or have questions.

THRIVENT FINANCIAL FOR LUTHERANS
Christ Lutheran Vail is now able to receive matching funds from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans on their own behalf instead of having to go under Fountain of Life. But to do so, we need to have a Coordinator. If you are a Thrivent member, and would be interested in serving Christ Lutheran Vail in this capacity, would you please contact Monty Schultz at Monty.Schultz@thrivent.com or Polly at 647-7684. A coordinator training meeting will take place on March 10th at Our Saviours Lutheran on Campbell and Helen. At this meeting the congregational coordinators will receive training on what funds are available and how to apply for them.
