Vail Vision October 11, 2006

Have you heard about this?

Yahoo! is assembling a digital "Time Capsule" of the human condition in the year, 2006. For the next 30 days (until November 8th), the international Yahoo! websites are collecting submissions from people around the world. Any person with an internet connection can submit digital images, words or sounds. Once all the submissions to the "Time Capsule" have been collected, this whole package will be "beamed" along a path of laser light into space.

Whenever we send "intelligence" into outer space I am reminded of a "Twilight Zone" episode about an alien culture that comes to earth. They are extremely polite and helpful. They have brought with them a book entitled, "How to Serve Mankind". But at the end of the show, we realize that this book is really a cookbook! I hope there are no aliens out there that see this digital "Time Capsule" and say, "mmm. I wonder if they taste like chicken!"

But the creation account in Genesis leads us to believe that the heavens and the earth were created by God for us. It may seem arrogant, but the whole universe appears to have been created for the purpose of creating a cosmic habitat for humanity. The nearest planets outside of our solar system are so far away, even if there is life out there, we will have been gone for hundreds of years before they see what happened to us in 2006!

The project is interesting, though. One of the categories is "Faith". A quick look at the site shows what people have faith in these days. For many, it is faith in Jesus Christ. Does the Great Commission extend to Alpha Centauri? Alas, that is a theological debate for greater mortals than I.

Perhaps God will look at our "Time Capsule" and say, "It's Time". Amen. Come quickly.

Tara will also have a sign-up sheet for Nursery Volunteers and also one for providing snacks in the Nursery.
