In the rim country

In the rim country...
At night, the creature comes out of hiding to roam the forest.  He is skeptical of humans, so he stays back behind the tree-line.  If your camp is missing food in the morning, he was likely there.  He is cunning and shy and remarkably very smart.  The number one driving force in his life is this:  He does not want to be seen.  He lives in the vast forests between Payson and Greer.  He is the Mogollon Monster.
As a child growing up in Arizona, I believed in the Mogollon Monster.  But surprisingly, even though I spent a large amount of time up in the Mogollon Rim, I never saw him.  I also didn’t fear him.  I simply thought it was cool that some long-lost creature might be living there.  There were many of my friends who believe in the Monster.  Some thought that he was an orphan boy left in the wilderness to fend for himself.  Others believed that he was a very lost ape who escaped from a zoo.  Others believed he was a whole other class of creature… a Cryptid.
Cryptozoology is the study of hidden creatures.  They show up in folklore throughout the world.  You might have heard of him as Bigfoot, Sasquatch, Mogollon Monster or Abominable Snowman.  In Mexico and Latin American countries he’s known as Chupacabra.
The most famous Cryptid is the Bigfoot captured by Roger Patterson and Robert Gimlin on October 20, 1967.  The Patterson-Gimlin film shows a hairy ape-like creature walking in the distance.  Some scientists believe he is simply a man dressed in an ape suit.  Others have reviewed that film and have concluded that a man cannot walk like the creature in the film and he must be something else.  Maybe it’s because I grew up believing in the Mogollon Monster, but I believed in the Bigfoot in the film.
I should have gone to West Virginia last week.  Members of the Sasquatch Watch of Virginia went camping in the Allegheny Mountain highlands to track down the illusive creature.  Armed with all of the latest in recording gear and GPS equipment they were hoping to find the find of the century.  They searched all the known sighting points in search of Sasquatch.  They were skunked.
Could a Sasquatch exist?  Does the Bible support the possibility? Well, the giant that David killed, Goliath was very large. He might have been a Cryptid.   Also Esau was so hairy that Jacob used a goatskin to imitate him before his father, Isaac.  Don’t forget the Nephelim mentioned in the Old Testament.
If there is a non-man creature out there that hasn’t been discovered, that would be very surprising.  But if Sasquatch is simply a big and hairy man that lost his way and lives in the wilderness then we should not forget that God loves him, too.
Blessings,
Pastor David Hook
