Day 2

Day 2 - September 4, 2012

What do all of these church names have in common?

  • Family of Faith Lutheran Church
  • Resurrection of Christ Church (ROCC) "This church ROCCs..”
  • Vail Church
  • Church of the Rincons
  • Church of the Rincon Valley, Church of the Rincon Hills,
  • Christ's Family Church (or Family of Christ Lutheran Church)
  • Church of the Vine
  • Cienega Valley Lutheran Church
  • Christ Lutheran Vail

Believe it or not, these were the candidate list of church names that were considered for our congregation.  They were all good names and all made sense.

We were struggling with what to name our church when we talked to our Mission Counselor, Jerry Kosberg.  He gave us sage advice.  “The name doesn’t drive the church, the church drives the name”.  In other words, we could name our church whatever we wanted.  The most important thing is to get out into the community and make that name stand for something.  That sure helped.

At first, I wasn’t too sure about the name, “Christ Lutheran Vail”.  Isn’t every Lutheran Church called Christ Lutheran?  But over time, I have begun to really appreciate the name.  It is a name that is time-tested and long lasting.  Now, I can’t imagine any other name for our congregation.

But more importantly, we have gone into the community to let people know what we stand for.  And with our new building, we’ll be able to do so much more.  Today, let’s pray that we would be a church so involved in the Vail Community that people would miss us if we were to ever go away.

“Dear God of community.  You have placed us to be your hands and feet in the Vail Community.  May we ever serve you by serving them.  May Christ Lutheran Vail be a church that serves in such a way that the community would miss us if You called us away”.  Amen.
