Devotion for 24 July

A brief prayer is offered that you can add to your daily prayers this week. The scripture is from our Sunday Service Bulletin for today.  We are continuing a summer sermon series on Psalms.
OT READING: Psalm 1 (English Standard Version)
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2          but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.
3          He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
4          The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
5          Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
6          for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
Devotion: Walking with the Lord
This Psalm is like many of the other Psalms and contrasts the ways of the righteous and the way of the wicked. If we walk our daily walk with the Lord we will not have to “mingle” with the wicked, come judgement day. The wicked are not prepared for the day of judgement and will be driven away like chaff as stated in verse 4. This is the first time that I have noted that verse 1 starts with “walks” then “stands” then “sits”. It seems as if we are going from a series of activities that winds down into a state of being blessed in the Lord. Verse 6 captures again what we have been saying in Psalms for the past 3 Sundays: “The Lord knows us”. Why don’t we walk with Him today?

We pray: Lord you know me well, I want to walk with you. Amen
